Pumpkin is very high in carotenoids. They are what give pumpkins their bright orange color. Carotenoids have been shown to neutralize free radicals-molecules that can attack cell membranes and leave the cells vulnerable to damage. Pumpkins are also high in lutein and zeaxanthin, which help minimize free radicals in the lens of the eye. As a result they may help prevent the formation of cataracts and reduce the risk of macular degeneration which usually results in blindness.

Pumpkins also contain several beneficial nutrients such as zinc, iron and fiber. Zinc deficiency may be related to osteoporosis of the hip and spine in older dogs. Iron stimulates red blood cell growth. Fiber is important for bowel health.

Sweet Potatoes are rich in Vitamin A (betacarotene) and Vitamin C. Both Vitamins A and C are powerful antioxidants that work in the body to remove free radicals. Sweet potato is shown to be good for stomach ulcers and inflamed conditions of the colon. It is beneficial for low blood pressure as well.
